As businesses increasingly transition to VoIP phone systems, understanding FXS and FXO interfaces is essential. These interfaces are integral to traditional analog phone systems but what’s the difference between them?
FXS vs. FXO
FXS (Foreign Exchange Subscriber) is an interface on the wall that provides Plain Old Telephone Service delivering an analog line. It supplies battery power provides a dial tone and generates ringing voltage essentially acting as the telephone company’s central office at your premises.
FXO (Foreign Exchange Office) is an interface on a phone or similar device that receives POTS service. It generates off-hook and on-hook signals (loop closure) to communicate with the FXS interface. Essentially FXO is what connects your phone to the FXS line.

FXS/FXO Without a PBX
FXS and FXO can function without a PBX but their true value is realized in VoIP systems through gateways that connect analog devices and traditional telephony with modern digital networks.
FXS Gateway and FXO Gateway
FXS Gateway: An FXS gateway connects analog devices, like telephones, fax machines, and modems, to a VoIP network. It provides power to these devices and establishes a communication link with the VoIP network by converting analog signals into digital ones. Essentially an FXS gateway replicates the functionality of a telephone company’s central office for your VoIP system.
FXO Gateway: An FXO gateway connects a VoIP network to the Public Switched Telephone Network (PSTN), allowing users to make and receive calls on traditional PSTN lines via their VoIP phones. It converts incoming analog signals from the PSTN into digital signals suitable for transmission over the internet mimicking a local telephone exchange.

Use Cases of FXS Gateway and FXO Gateway
Connecting Analog Devices to VoIP Phone Systems: Businesses that want to keep using their analog devices like phones fax machines, and modems, can connect them to FXS gateways. This allows them to enjoy the benefits of a SIP based phone system or unified communications without needing to replace existing equipment. Meanwhile, FXO gateways connect the VoIP phone system to PSTN lines providing a bridge between old and new technologies.
Integrating Legacy PBX with a SIP/VoIP Network: An FXS gateway can be used to integrate a legacy PBX with a modern VoIP network, enabling businesses to modernize their communications infrastructure without the expense of replacing all their old equipment.
PSTN Fallback: An FXO gateway is invaluable for businesses that require a PSTN fallback. It connects VoIP systems to the PSTN ensuring that calls can still be made and received even if the internet or VoIP service goes down.
These gateways ensure a smooth transition from traditional telephony to modern VoIP systems providing flexibility cost savings and the assurance of continued communication even during network disruptions.
